Mobile Money Interoperability

 

Mobile Money Interoperability is the ability to send/receive money to/from customers who are on a different mobile money network. The money sent from a different network is added directly to the customer’s account balance in the same way it would reflect had it been sent by a customer on the same network. Before interoperability the receiver of money would get a voucher code and go to the sender’s network to withdraw the money.

 

The benefit of “Interops” is that the customer can use the money received from another network to pay a bill, make a purchase at a merchant or make a withdrawal from their own network agent. Lastly, the customer will not be pressured to withdraw the money within 7 days since it is already in their mobile money wallet. The only condition to enjoy Interoperability is that the customer must be registered for either T-kash, Airtel Money or M-pesa. Customers who are not registered on mobile money will continue to receive voucher codes.

 

Send money from T-kash to Other Networks
Sending money to M-pesa/Airtel Money from T-kash is the same a sending money to another T-kash Customer.

1.Go to your T-kash Menu.
2.Select Send Money.
3.Select to Mobile.
4.Select Enter Phone Number
5.Enter M-Pesa/Airtel Money Recipient Phone Number.
6.Confirm Name of Recipient.
7.Enter PIN to confirm Transaction.


Send money from M-pesa to other Networks.
Please follow these steps to send money from M-pesa to T-kash.

1.Dial *234# from your Safaricom Line.
2. Select Option “1” titled “M-pesa Products”.
3. Select Option “98” titled “MORE”.
4. Select Option “8” titled “M-pesa Tuma Popote”.
5. Enter T-kash Recipient Phone Number.
6. Confirm Name of Recipient.
7. Enter PIN to confirm Transaction.

 

Send money from Airtel Money to other networks.
Please follow these steps to send money from Airtel Money to T-kash.

1. Dial *222*1#.
2. Select option 1 – Send money.
3. Select option 3 – Send money to T-kash.
4. Enter recipient’s number.
5. Confirm Name of recipient.
6. Enter PIN when prompted.

  • What is Interoperability?

    This is the sending of money across different mobile money platforms. For example, sending money from your T-kash account into your M-pesa/Airtel money accounts or vice versa.

  • What is the difference between interoperability and the way T-kash/M-pesa/Airtel Money customers have been sending money to other networks?

    Before interoperability the receiver of money would get a voucher code and go to the sender’s network to withdraw the money. With interoperability the money is deposited into the receiver’s mobile money account and is reflected in the account balance.

  • What is necessary for interoperability to happen between a Telkom and Safaricom customer?

    The Telkom customer must have an active T-kash account and the Safaricom customer must have an active M-pesa account.

  • What is necessary for interoperability to happen between a Telkom and Airtel customer?

    The Telkom customer must have an active T-kash account and the Airtel customer must have an active Airtel Money account.

  • Will customers still receive voucher codes?

    Customers will receive voucher codes if they are NOT REGISTERED on mobile money. For example if a T-kash customer sends money to a Safaricom customer who is not on M-pesa the Safaricom customer will receive a voucher code.

  • If a T-kash customer receives money from an M-pesa customer, where does the T-kash customer withdraw the money from?

    The T-kash customer will withdraw the money from a T-kash agent because the money from the M-pesa customer will be added to their T-kash account balance.

  • If you are registered on T-kash and someone on M-pesa sends you money, does it reflect on your T-kash balance?

    If you are on T-kash and receive money from an M-pesa customer, your T-kash balance will increase to reflect the balance received from the M-pesa customer.

  • Can a T-kash customer send the money or pay a bill using money send by a M-pesa customer?

    Yes, they can because the money will be in their T-kash account.

  • Sam a T-kash customer currently has a T-kash balance of Kshs 500, Tom an M-pesa customer sends Sam Kshs 400, what will be Sam’s new T-kash balance?

    Sam’s new T-kash balance will be Kshs 900.

  • Can Sam use the money received from Tom to buy Kshs 850 of Electricity Tokens?

    Yes, Sam can use T-kash to buy Kshs 850 of token because the money sent by Tom is added onto his T-kash account.

  • Can Sam withdraw Kshs 850 from a T-kash agent?

    Yes, Sam can withdraw Kshs 850 from a T-kash agent because the money sent by Tom is added onto his T-kash account.

  • Sam is a Telkom customer but is not registered on T-kash, Tom an M-pesa customer sends Sam Kshs 400. Can Sam withdraw the money from a T-kash agent?

    No, Sam CANNOT withdraw the amount because he is NOT A REGISTERED T-kash customer. He will receive a Voucher Code and go withdraw the amount from an M-pesa agent.
